Challenges
- Repainting: All walls, ceilings, and doors were repainted to give the restroom a fresh and improved appearance.
- Under-Cabinet Lighting: Hidden LED lights were installed beneath the cabinet to provide soft, ambient lighting.
- Ceiling Lights: Additional hidden and focused ceiling lights were incorporated to improve overall illumination.
- Occupancy Signboard: A digital signboard was added outside the restroom to display occupancy status (busy or free). This was achieved using a proximity sensor to detect the door’s locking status.
- Fun Signboard with Buzzer: Inside the restroom, a fun signboard with a timer and buzzer was installed. It warns users if they spend more than 6 minutes inside. A PIR sensor detects user entry, triggering the lights and timer. After 6 minutes, the lights flash, a buzzer sounds, and a message (“Game over, back to work”) is displayed for 20 seconds.
- Mirror Light: A sensor placed under the faucet activates the mirror’s top light when someone approaches.
- Trash Bin Light: The trash bin is equipped with a sensor. When the bin is full, a light on it activates, indicating that it needs emptying.
Smart Features Utilized
To add both energy-efficiency and a touch of fun to the restroom, various sensors and controllers were deployed:
- Autonics Counter Timer CT6S-4p: This timer counts the time spent in the restroom.
- Proximity Sensor (Autonics PRL08-1.5DN): Detects the door’s lock status.
- Photo Sensor (Autonics BJ400-DDT-P): Controls the lighting above the mirror.
- PIR Sensors: Regulate lighting inside and outside the restroom based on occupancy.
- Fibaro Relay Switch: Provides mobile control over lighting.
- Capacitive Sensor (Autonics CR18-8DP): Monitors the trash bin’s status.
